| Patrick Donohue, Project Manager
of the construction effort for Seattle Parks and Recreation,
inspects the arriving bench and landscape plaques, while Libby Carr
of SSLPP assists with the plaque placement. |
|

|
| The construction
crew works on the final concrete pour; preparing and leveling so the
brickwork can begin and plaques inset. |
|

|
| Sometimes several
parts of the project were going on simultaneously. Here,
finish work on the concrete base of the benches was proceeding while
another section was still being poured. |
|

|
| A final measurement;
making sure the plaques will be in their proper places on September
6th. |
|

|
| While concrete is
drying in the background, the crew is already attaching the wooden
bench seating. |

Please Post This Printable Announcement See
our Schedule of Activities:
Special Note (Sept.
5, 2008): We just got permission from the Superintendent of Seattle
Parks and Recreation to sell the 4" X 8" bricks until the
end of this year. They will be put in the plaza about July 1,
2009, on a one-time basis only. If you missed your
chance to purchase a brick, this will be your only chance to add
your name and message to those already in the Plaza. The
prices have increased, and we cannot take orders for commemorative
bricks. Thank you again for all your help and support.

Come
join us as we celebrate our new plaza with free celebration
cake, fun, music,
art projects, arts and crafts vendors, and a free showing of
a film on the New York Statue
of Liberty. See the new Time Capsule contents, and
contribute your interviews and ideas. Admission is FREE.
|
The
music starts at 11:00 AM, including the Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band and,
later, Mood Swings. There will be food, arts and crafts, and dancing exhibits throughout the
day. Highlights include the formal Dedication Ceremony
at 1:30 PM and the special Luminaria Lighting by the Girl
Scouts and the Concert at 7:30 PM by Jeanette
Alexander.
|
|
We
will add other events to our schedule, as they appear.
Also, look to the left for some of the latest pictures on the progress of
the project. The crew from Seattle Parks and
Recreation is doing an outstanding job of making sure the
plaza is finished on time, and it shows. Thanks,
particularly, to Patrick Donohue and the entire crew, and
yes...our Lady Liberty will be back that day.
|
Thanks
again to everyone who worked so hard to make this the
outstanding success it is--here's our chance to party, and
to let all these folks know how much we appreciate the work
so many people put into this project, and to have some fun!
|
Additionally,
there will other activities at the Bathhouse: a display of
memorabilia, a representation of what may go into a time capsule, a continuously-running video about the history of the original
Statue of Liberty in New York, and more art work. Also, a variety of Alki and
West Seattle non-profit organizations will be present. As
the sun sets over the Olympic Range in the west, the very special Luminaria
Concert will conclude this day of celebration and dedication to the
principles embodied in our own "little sister of
liberty". This day is also a heartfelt "Thank
You" from the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project
and the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation to the hundreds of people who made this Statue and Plaza
possible over the years. Without all
the people of Alki Beach, Seattle, and beyond who have
given so generously of their time, talent, and treasure, there
would be no new Statue or Plaza. This Statue and Plaza is a tribute to
liberty, true, but it is also a monument to the generosity of the
American spirit. Thank you, each and every one. Paul
& Libby Carr, Co-Chairs,
Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project

Catch the Larger Vision:
As many people know, the Boy Scouts of America put up the
original “Little Sisters of Liberty”, including ours, in 1952. There were
once 200 of them in 39 states and 4 American territories. See the larger story
at http://troop101.thescouts.com/liberty/
to learn more about this original effort. Unfortunately, only about 100 now
remain.
You can email us for more information at info@sealady.org,
or call us at 206-938-8720 or 206-938-8721.
Thank you all for your
incredible support. |
